Blepharoplasty & Brow Lifts
They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, but they are also like a calendar atop the face with the potential to readily reveal a person’s true age. Crow’s feet, worry lines, and undereye “bags” can add years to your visage, so many patients are interested in procedures that restore a younger appearance to the eye.
Blepharoplasty, sometimes referred to as an “eyelid lift,” often meets patients’ goals for enhancing the aesthetics of the eyes. This procedure can target loose or excess skin on the upper or lower eyelid, or both, when necessary. One of our surgeons may remove excess fat from under the upper eyelid, eliminate under-eye bags, or correct drooping of the eyelid.
A brow lift can improve the eye’s appearance. As we get older, the natural curve of the brow tends to flatten. A brow lift can restore that arch, and it can also lessen or improve worry lines and other forehead wrinkles.
Our Doctors perform brow and forehead lifts to raise eyebrows and reduce ridges and furrows on the forehead, creating a smoother, more youthful appearance. This procedure can be performed in conjunction with other surgeries.
An incision is generally made across the top of the head from the front of one ear to the front of the other ear. The forehead and brows are elevated and excess skin is removed. The flap is then sutured. Newer techniques now allow us to perform forehead lifting through small incisions in the scalp by using an endoscope and specialized instruments. This accelerates the healing process.
Antibiotics may be prescribed for several days following surgery. Sutures are generally removed within one week. Swelling and some bruising may occur, but should subside within a few weeks. Our doctors will prescribe ice compresses and eye exercises to reduce swelling and regain mobility. Women will be allowed to use eye cosmetics two weeks after surgery. You can proceed with your normal daily activities within 1 to 2 weeks. A final evaluation may occur within several months from the initial surgical procedure.
Our blepharoplasty and brow lifts in Irving, Mesquite, and Ennis, Texas, are often performed in combination. Before moving forward with either a blepharoplasty or a brow lift, one of our surgeons at DFW Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery will thoroughly evaluate your facial structures to determine if these procedures can give you the results you desire. Certain conditions, like eye diseases, may contraindicate these procedures. One of our surgeons will also review your medical history and discuss any risks and potential side effects with you.
You should also be aware of the recovery process before you undergo surgery so that you will be aware of what to expect as well as signs of complications that warrant follow-up with one of our surgeons. Be sure that you understand all of your surgeon’s pre- and post-operative instructions so you will do everything possible to reduce your risk of complications.
If you feel that your eyes are prematurely aging you, consider blepharoplasty or a brow lift. Discuss your treatment options with our doctors.
Your insurance company may pay for part or all of the cost of surgery if the procedure is performed as a result of visual impairment. Because every insurance carrier is different, it is recommended that you check with your own insurance company to determine the level of coverage.
