Your face may not be the first site you think of when you hear the word “implants,” but in patients with disproportionately small facial features, an implant can balance and enhance the face’s contours and appearance.
In particular, patients with sunken cheeks, weak jaws, or recessed chin can benefit from implants made of biocompatible materials to augment these structures.
In placing facial implants, one of our surgeons will make a small incision in a location that is not very visible, doing so by an intraoral approach when possible. The implant is then inserted at the identified site.
Patients who undergo this procedure may experience some swelling after the fact, and some evidence of this swelling may continue to be present for a few months after the procedure. Discuss any other risks or side effects with one of our oral surgeons at DFW Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery as part of the treatment planning process.
In contrast to the under-defined features treated with implants, excess fatty tissues on the cheeks, chin, or neck can prematurely age your facial appearance and can be just as detrimental as underdeveloped features. In these cases, patients may opt for facial liposuction to remove subcutaneous fat from the face or neck. Patients need to have a certain quality of skin tone to get good results with facial liposuction, so be sure to ask one of our surgeons if your case is appropriate for this treatment.
Other factors that can influence outcomes of facial liposuction include lifestyle habits like smoking, diet, exercise, and genetics.
The fat is removed by suctioning in a minimally invasive procedure completed in an outpatient setting. One of our oral surgeons will need to make tiny incisions in order to remove the fat and will take care to leave behind enough fatty tissue to adequately support the facial structures as the aging process continues to have its effects.
With either facial implants or facial liposuction, be sure to discuss with our surgeons any pre- or post-operative instructions to reduce your chance of complications.
